Life In Motion -- Featuring Evolve

There are sayings that come up from time to time, placatory sayings that seem annoying yet true. "The more things change, the more they stay the same." What does that really mean and why do people say it? It's placatory but I don't even know who it's supposed to be placating.

Does it really make any of us feel better if we know that things are both evolving and remaining constant at the same time, and if we know anything about physics or science in general, we know that both of those things cannot happen simultaneously. So why say such silly things?

I've never been good at just accepting a statement to be true. From a very young age, if someone said "This is happening." I would immediately pipe up, "Why ... is this happening?" and if the people around me did not pause to explain to me then I did not give them much credence. If you can't explain why, then you shouldn't talk at all about it, or at least that's how I thought it should be.

I am the oldest and follow in the footsteps of many other firstborn children. I wanted to know everything about my world and I needed to know 'why' my world worked the way it did. I also expected to be treated like a little adult and not as a child.

For the most part, I behaved like a little adult so I earned the 'explanation' from those adults whose company I kept. When I met new adults who did not know me so well, that's when those placatory sayings seemed to appear, and they never worked to placate me either.

I like the action verb 'Evolve' as a store name. It implies that this store constantly looks for change. It could be an exclamatory verb that stands alone, "Evolve!" and people would pause and listen to someone who shouted that, wouldn't they?

I see the world Evolve and I think of this question, "Evolve... how?" How can I do something today that's different than yesterday. How could I learn something new? Meet someone new? Understand something new? Each of these questions also implies action, life in action, and that's the only kind of life worth living.

There are a few constants that remain true in our Second Life, and the more things change, the more things stay the same can apply in a rare few cases. Mostly, I'm very glad that life around me is in motion. If I miss a day or two, I miss a whole world of activity. And if I'm there, participating in it, then I'm experiencing my life in motion. My life... evolving.
